Miami, Florida USA, - International workshop on Femtocell Networks (FEMnet)

IEEE 1st International Workshop on Femtocell Networks (FEMnet) will be held in Miami Florida in December 6, 2010 as part of Globecome 2010 conference. Dr. Ismail Guvenc is one of the Workshop Chairs.

Hollywood, Los Angeles USA, - August 2008 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award

The US Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development was awarded to Joint Video Team(JVT), a collective partnership effort of ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group(MPEG), for development of the high profile of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.

The award was recognized outstanding contributions of Broadcom, NTT DOCOMO, Dolby Laboratories, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Microsoft, Motorola, Panasonic, Sony, and Thomson.

NTT DOCOMO and DOCOMO USA Labs employees collaborated greatly in this standard. H.264/MPEG-4 is a high compression digital video codec standard, jointly written by the ITU-T VCEG, MPEG under JVT. Our contribution was a highly efficient video codec based on an innovation in specific arithmetic coding. The standardized technology enables high definition images in the H.264 video coding system to deliver HD video over satellite and cable TV as well as Blue-ray Disc.

Tokyo, Japan –September 2008 NTT DOCOMO and Morpho introduced improved video quality on mobile phones

DOCOMO’s technology enables a substantially improved viewing experience for multimedia services over any communication platform by improving the resolution and quality of images and video in real-time. The technology achieves enhanced quality and sharpness while providing a significant reduction in annoying artifacts such as mosquito noise, blockiness and temporal flicker caused by various modules in the image/video processing pipeline. Being highly scalable in terms of computational profiles, the technology has very low memory requirements and produces high quality images/video even for the simplest profiles. The superior performance of the technology compared to conventional techniques is due to adaptive non-linear processing and spatio-temporal enhancement. The technology is well-suited for deployment in a wide array of devices such as mobile phones, multimedia players, set-top boxes and television sets.

Collaboration and our contribution

The technology was invented and refined at DOCOMO USA Labs in close collaboration with the Research Laboratories of NTT DOCOMO in Japan.

A version of the technology for mobile devices is developed for commercial deployment in collaboration with Morpho, Inc. This technology was introduced and showed at NTT DOCOMO booth at “CEATEC JAPAN 2008, the world-famous exhibition of cutting-edge IT and electronics technology, which was held at the Makuhari Messe, Tokyo from September 30 to October 4.”
